Australia’s Best Nurses Awarded on Gold Coast
Tuesday, 02 June, 2015
Winners of the 2015 Awards were announced at a gala ceremony held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 May hosted by the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) as part of the APNA National Conference Brave to Bold.
“With these nurses leading the way, the Australian community is better cared for, better informed and better empowered along every step of their individual health journey,” said APNA President Karen Booth.
The judging panels were extremely impressed by some of the stories that emerged from the award winners and nominees. This included Amy Bowen, who started nursing at the age of just 14. With her focus on early assessment and efficient use of resources, Amy has been responsible for bringing about a complete shift in culture of staff of a number of aged care facilities, thereby vastly reducing hospital admissions.
Another award winner, Samantha Read, was instrumental in setting up a local sexual health clinic after the only sexual health service withdrew from the local youth resource centre. Samantha has worked tirelessly in the community, setting up partnerships with local youth networks and running sexual health sessions within schools focusing on vulnerable young people at risk.
In the field of continence care, Alison Lee has led the way in removing some of the stigma that is often associated with incontinence. Alison has worked with her patient community to raise awareness of the fact incontinence is not an inevitable part of growing old and people don’t have to just put up with it.
