Innovative solution for biomedical waste management and processing

Healthcare activities protect and save lives. But what about the waste and by-products that they generate? Biomedical waste management processes can be expensive and difficult to set up for healthcare centres.

Unsafe management can cause major issues. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 40% of hepatitis and 2.5% of HIV cases around the world are caused by health professionals becoming exposed in the workplace (Report on biomedical waste, WHO 2002). Moreover, the treatment and removal of biomedical waste can release pathogens and toxic pollutants. WHO directives state that biomedical waste should be treated as close as possible to where it is produced. Keeping this in mind, Sterilwave® supports you in optimising your process in the interests of better logistical management of biomedical waste systems, thereby limiting its contact with operatives and any transportation of this waste.

Why Sterilwave?

Biomedical waste management is essential for healthcare institutions striving to prevent and combat hospital-acquired infections and other biohazards. The Sterilwave range, developed by Bertin Technologies, meets the needs of medical centres, clinics, hospitals and laboratories of all sizes generating anywhere from a few kilos to several tonnes of biohazardous waste per day.

Sterilwave is the alternative on-site solution to reduce the risk of contamination in comparison with incineration and landfills, thereby making it eco-friendly, cost-effective and safe. No prior segregation of waste is required. This equipment can transform all types of clinical by-products into sterilised, inert and unrecognisable waste within its single, unique vessel. Once the biomedical waste has been processed, it can then be considered normal municipal waste without any biological risk to anyone handling it. Sterilwave solutions provide traceability, safety and a guaranteed level of sterilisation. They can also provide a significant reduction in the cost of waste removal compared to other standard solutions (collection, incinerators, autoclaves, chemicals).

Sterilwave complies with international regulations on rendering clinical waste safe (STAATT recommendations) as well as with the strictest standards adopted in numerous countries, most notably France’s NF X30-503 standard. The equipment is manufactured in France and complies with CE (European Community) marking and benefits from Bertin Technologies’ ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Efficient microwave technology

Based on innovative technology which combines grinding with microwave sterilisation, Sterilwave machines are ultracompact and completely automated.

The uniqueness of Sterilwave is linked to its innovative microwave technology and high level of treatment respecting both the environment and security processes.

A 30-minute automatic process in one single vessel

From infectious waste to municipal waste

Choose from three sizes to fit your facility’s requirements

Sterilwave is available in 3 different processing sizes (20, 50 and 70 kg/h), depending on facility requirements and facility waste production. Environmental impact and operating costs are significantly reduced while ensuring the safety of the operator. As it uses microwave technology, Sterilwave does not need a steam generator, so there is no risk from excess pressure and no liquid effluent is produced.

Sterilwave 100

Sterilwave 100 is particularly suited to medical facilities generating only small amounts of waste. The biomedical waste management system can treat 200 L/h (up to 20 kg/h, with a density of 1 L = 0.1 kg) of waste. It is ultracompact and comes in a mobile version, for use in a container for example. Average cycle time is 30 min.

Its ultracompact size means its installation only requires 10 m2 of space. Sterilwave 100 is the solution for easy use and maintenance, with operating costs amongst the lowest on the market.

Sterilwave 250

With a waste treatment capacity of 500 L/h (or up to 50 kg/h with a waste density of 1 L = 0.1 kg), Sterilwave 250 allows medium-sized institutions to treat their biomedical waste, guaranteeing safety and traceability at greatly reduced operating costs. Average cycle time is 30 min.

The compact size of the Sterilwave 250 unit means waste can be treated immediately where it is produced. Its installation requires only 12 m2 of space and no additional infrastructure.

Sterilwave 440

Sterilwave 440 is the ideal waste treatment solution for institutions producing large quantities of biohazardous waste, as it can treat 880 L/h (or up to 70 kg/h, with a density of 1 L = 0.1 kg) of waste with minimal operating costs. Average cycle time 30 to 32 min.

Its easy installation requires only 20 m2 of space for safe treatment of large quantities of biomedical waste. The result is a stable and dry final waste product that can be used as an RDF combustible (refuse-derived fuel).
