As the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) expands its reach, health professionals are reminded to direct patients to the online self-assessment tool, My Access Checker.
Health professionals play an important role in helping patients with disability access the supports they need and My Access Checker is an important online self-assessment tool.
My Access Checker is available at ndis.gov.au/my-access-checker, this tool helps people with permanent and significant disability understand whether they may be able to access assistance from the NDIS.
To assist patients through the assessment and planning process, health professionals may be asked to  provide information about their patient’s diagnosis, treatment, the duration of their impairment and the impact their disability has on their ability to perform daily tasks.
The NDIS is currently available in the following locations:
·         South Australia: Children age 13 and under on 1 July 2014
·         Tasmania: Young people age 15-24
·         Victoria: People up to age 65 in the local government area of City of Greater Geelong, Colac-Otway Shire, Borough of Queenscliffe and Surf Coast Shire
·         New South Wales: People up to age 65 in the local government area of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie
