Wednesday, 07 January, 2015
Professor Michael Kidd AM, President of World Organisation of Family Doctors has been appointed to the position of Patron of General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA).
Professor Kidd takes over the reins from Professor John Murtagh AM and was patron of the General Practice Students Network since 2007. e
Professor Kidd said it’s an honour to follow Professor John Murtagh in this role, and praised Professor Murtagh’s substantial contribution to Australian general practice, and to GPRA.
"With the global focus on universal health coverage, general practice remains a great career choice for medical graduates, however, this is a challenging time for general practice in Australia,” Professor Kidd said.
“I am looking forward to doing all I can to support the members of GPRA, the next generation of our nation's general practitioners, as well as the members of our wonderful student network, GPSN."
GPRA Chair Dr David Chessor said he couldn’t imagine anyone better than Professor Kidd to serve GPRA members as patron.
“General practice is currently facing some of the most important and fundamental changes we have ever seen in Australia, and it is more important than ever to be promoting the speciality to Australia’s future doctors,” Dr Chessor said.
Professor Kidd is also the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University and the former president of the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He has research and education interests in primary health care and family medicine, e-health, health policy, medical education, safety and quality in primary care, and the primary care management of HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmissible infections.
GPRA thanked Professor John Murtagh for his continued support to the organisation and its members, as he takes on the role of our Emeritus Patron.
“We are eternally grateful for the many valuable hours Professor Murtagh has given in supporting GPRA members over the past 14 years, and are delighted that he will continue his association as Emeritus Patron,” Dr Chessor said
