Medical professionals have topped Australia’s most regarded professions with Nursing been officially recognised as Australia’s ‘most ethical and honest profession’ according to the latest Roy Morgan Image of Professions Survey.
“Nurses and midwives are often intertwined into some of the most intimate moments in a patient’s life and as a result take their ethical and professional responsibilities very seriously.” Says General Secretary of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, Brett Holmes.
Nurses scored 92%, with Doctors and Pharmacists sharing 84%; along with Dentists 71%. Federal Politicians scored 18% in the survey but Car Salespeople rounded out the list at 4%.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation has been calling for such a move for many years and supports the proposal. Recent surveys indicate that 92% of Australia's nursing and midwifery workforce currently work shifts outside regular Monday-Friday day-shift hours each month, with 78% of them reporting that they work outside of Monday-Friday day shift, on a weekly basis.
“We have long voiced our concerns about the need for 24-hour, seven-day a week childcare to meet the needs of our members who leave their children and families to carry out shift work,” Federal Secretary, Lee Thomas said today.
