Lite-med Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter (ESWL)

Passing a kidney stone through the body can be a very painful experience for a patient. But Lite-med’s ESWL crumbles kidney stones painlessly and without requiring anaesthesia.

The ESWL integrates X-ray and ultrasound into one system, allowing patients with kidney stones to be treated by a single machine, creating treatment efficiency, saving time and reducing costs.

The ESWL has an accurate localisation system, treating patients by taking two X-ray images at 0°and 30°, after which ultrasound automatically commences, tracking the stone through the patient in real time and breaking it down. If the stone moves out of the focal area, the ultrasound automatically stops, reducing the risk of side effects.

Lite-med states that the ESWL’s hitting rate is 90% and claims competitor hitting rates are at 45–50%. The patient lies on a computer-controlled treatment bed that moves as required to support the therapy.

Depending on the size and density of the stone, it takes 30 to 40 min to break the stone into small pieces, then water is used to flush the remainder out of the patient’s body.

The award-wining ESWL has over 20 patents globally and is FDA, GMP and ISO13485 approved.
